Wildlife photography in your own backyard. Learn how to photograph the animals and birds in your own home town. I decided to write City Critters because I believe that everyone—no matter what their skill level—can take better photos.
In 2020, my career took a major turn. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I pivoted away from taking photos of humans and human-centered events to capturing the beauty of birds, insects, and animals.
What I learned during that time was that my photojournalist skills for making storytelling portraits of people could be used to make portraits of Harbor Seals or Mandarin Ducks. That the skills to photograph the peak action of sporting events work just as well for photographing birds in flight. Telling the stories of the wildlife in my city.
Now I believe you don’t need to travel far away to be a wildlife photographer. I can make great wildlife photos of the wondrous variety of wildlife that live all around us in cities and towns and you can too.
When I’m not taking photos, I love teaching people how to take better wildlife photos themselves. From Seattle to Rome, I’ve taught thousands of people the key secrets to telling stories in pictures.
